Castellated holes appear on the edge of PCBs typically as plated half holes. They can also be offset so that instead of a perfect semi-circle they appear as a small or larger portion of a broken circle. At Bittele Electronics the hole size for castellated holes must be at least 0.5mm in diameter with space between hole edges to be at least 0.4mm.
Castellated Holes vs. Pads for Module

I am designing a multi-chip module that will be soldered directly to a PCB. The required form factor needs a pad pitch of 20mil. I know that the usual way of doing solder-down PCBs is to use castellated holes, but at a 20mil pitch that looks like it will lead to a pretty expensive process.
It would be much easier from a design perspective to just do exposed pads on the bottom and assemble the module as though it were an LGA. Is this a bad idea? If so, why? Could I maybe get the edges plated without the holes? Any other suggestions for approaching this issue?
Thanks!
